Competition success for Dover Gymnastics Club

Two gymnasts from Dover Gym Club’s Floor and Vault Squad recently became South East Regional Champions.

12-year-old Amy Laffranchi won a Gold medal in the Advanced Girls category and 11-year-old Libby Holness won a Gold in the Advanced Girls 2005 category, in the regional Floor & Vault Championships held at the Guildford Spectrum.

Nine other Dover gymnasts won Silver medals and six won Bronze medals. Six were placed in the top six and the remaining four achieved respectable placings in what was a tough competition with gymnasts from all over Kent, Surrey and Sussex.

Meanwhile girls from the Women’s Artistic Squad have also been in action at the South East Regional Modified Code competition.

The Artistic Squad gymnasts train on the four gymnastic apparatus: Floor, Vault, Bars and Beam. In the Modified 4 2005 group Bethany Dobson won a Silver Medal and Ursula Wright achieved 4th place.

In the Modified 5 2007/2008 group Holly Burrows achieved 4th place and Charlie Cousin was 13th.

In the Modified 2 2001+ competition, Olivia Bartlett won a Silver Medal; and Lauren Colquhoun achieved 5th place in the Modified 3 competition.

The autumn is the busiest time of year for the club with a packed competition calendar. The Floor and Vault Squad are training for the Pegasus Club competition and another Regional competition for Novice level taking place in the next few weeks.

The Artistic Squad are busy training for the Kent Championships on 3rd and 4th December and both squads are also gearing up for Dover’s own Club Championships on 18th December which is the highlight of the year.

Head Coach Doreen Critchlee said: ‘Our gymnasts have been working very hard and it is great to see them achieve well at competitions.

‘2016 has been another phenomenal year for Dover Gym Club. We’ve had excellent results at competition, seen interest in the club reach record levels, particularly in the weeks after the Rio Olympics, and it is our 40th anniversary year.’
