Our County Floor & Vault Champions

Youngsters from Dover Gym Club have got the club’s 40th anniversary year off to a great start – by becoming county champions.

Three teams entered the Kent Floor & Vault Competition for Advanced, Bronze, Silver and Gold level gymnasts held at Pegasus Sports Centre in Maidstone on Sunday 14 February and all three teams achieved Gold Medals.

The gymnasts who took part train mainly on two gymnastics apparatus: the floor and the vault. For Floor they have to perform a routine with a number of skills, moves and balances set to instrumental music. For the vault they have two goes at running and performing a vault move, with the better of the two vault scores counting towards their overall final score.

The teams’ competition attracted clubs from all over Kent and was the first major competition of the year.

Club Director and Vice Chairman Jon Green said: ‘2015 was a phenomenal year for our gymnasts with many medals achieved in competitions, so there is a lot to live up to this year.

‘It’s also our 40th anniversary, so an extra special reason for us to be celebrating our achievements.

‘Our next event is our first ever secondary schools’ competition for pupils in years 7, 8 and 9 which we are hosting on Monday 21 March as part of our anniversary celebrations and also to mark 2016 being an Olympic year.’
